a high degree of thirst and frequent urination can .... Infections of the bladder would you simply test your urine is not it?
no sense to be afraid, until you know exactly what happened.

You do not mention sex, but a woman, from 0 to 20 is normal
A man aged 0 to 15 is normal, so if you are a man 17 years is only a slight increase, and could be caused by something as simple as hay fever.

I think the only real symptom is the frequency, and simple that it would be an early sign of a bladder infection. Foot swelling caused by fluid retention that may cause the slight increase in thirst.
I understand your concern with only one kidney, but I think they're blowing this way disproportionate and the need for the physician, the expected conclusions.
